Location - Vila Real, LamegoThe complex is conveniently tucked in a 8 hectare property on the southern banks of the Douro river. It lies between the river and laced tiers of vineyards, in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the port wine region, where dramatic views and panoramic landscapes are touched by gentle, fresh breeze.
The Douro Valley is located in a beautiful region, endowed with sunshine and a very particular climate, great wines and remarkable ports are produced for which the region is known worldwide.
The Douro valley, where nature and the work and will of local men had to come together to create unique wines in a region classified as world heritage by UNESCO, is one of the most fascinating humanized landscapes in the world.
The first officially demarcated wine region in the world, by the Marquis of Pombal in 1756, it combines the tradition of great Port wines with the excellence of new Douro table wines, with greater worldwide recognition year-on-year, in an overwhelming landscape of centuries-old vineyards set on steep hill slopes.
Take a boat trip, drive along the river or take a train: these are the best ways to enjoy and discover the breathtaking landscapes of the Douro valley. The wine route allows one to visit the wine-growing domains of the region, the so-called Quintas, where you can take part in local traditions in a welcoming environment and be surprised by the quality of their wines. Visits to museums and palaces as well as sporting activities are also available to our guests.
The multiple towns and villages spread throughout the valley are very much worth visiting as they will allow the traveller to get in touch with the region’s history and traditions, historical hidden treasures: Lamego and its baroque architecture, Régua with its riverside road along the Douro and the Douro museum, Vila real and the magnificent MateusPalace, not to mention century old traditions from São João da Pesqueira, Pinhão or Vila Nova de Foz Côa.
The history of Port wine and the top quality Douro wines are closely linked to their Quintas.
The different museums in the region whisper the long-kept stories, traditions and history of the Douro and its people. Examples of museums worth visiting are:
- Lamego Museum displays a highly valuable collection of religious art showcasing the strong historical link between the city and the Catholic Church.
- DouroMuseum tells the story about the region, the wines and its most relevant people.
- Ervamoira combines the history of the Palaeolithic period in the Foz Côa natural park with the tradition of the Ramos Pinto port house.
- MateusPalace and its valuable library where one can find an example of the 1st edition of the 15th Century “Lusiadas” poem.
The region, rich in nature forms, provides an ideal base for a wide range of outdoor activities: cycling alongside the river, golf in Amarante or Viseu, sailing, waterskiing or horse-riding.
A visit to the Douro is not complete without a trip on a rabelo boat or a ride on a historical steam train: the beauty of the landscape evokes memories of a long gone era and the region’s traditions.
